Rafael Souza works on the conversion of lignocellulosic agricultural residue into industrial feedstock — a field with a long record of processes that function technically and fail commercially. His laboratory's distinguishing choice has been to treat the economics as a research variable rather than an external constraint.

He trained in chemical engineering at USP, took a doctorate on enzymatic hydrolysis, and spent four years in a sugarcane processing group before returning to academic research. That period taught him that yield improvements which do not reach the grower do not change behaviour.

His group now runs a consortium with eleven agricultural cooperatives, and publishes its process economics alongside its yields.

Research title

Economically Viable Conversion of Sugarcane Residue under Field-Realistic Feedstock Variability

Abstract

The programme develops a pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis sequence for sugarcane bagasse, evaluated under the compositional variability characteristic of field-collected rather than laboratory-standardised feedstock, with integrated process economics.

Problem statement

Laboratory conversion processes for lignocellulosic residue routinely report yields obtained on standardised feedstock. Field-collected material varies substantially in composition, and reported yields degrade accordingly. Process economics are rarely published, making commercial viability difficult to assess independently.

Research methodology

Process development across 23 pretreatment variants, evaluated on feedstock sampled from eleven cooperatives across two harvest seasons to capture compositional variability, with techno-economic analysis integrated at each development stage.

Major findings

The developed sequence achieved 78 percent theoretical conversion across the observed variability range, against 81 percent on standardised feedstock — a substantially smaller degradation than comparable processes. Techno-economic analysis indicated viability at prevailing feedstock prices provided transport distance remained under 60 kilometres.

Academic contribution

The work delivers a conversion process validated under realistic variability, with published economics enabling independent assessment.

Impact & contribution

Souza's group has developed a pretreatment and hydrolysis sequence achieving commercially viable conversion yields on sugarcane bagasse under field-realistic feedstock variability. Two granted patents cover the pretreatment step. The distinctive element of the work is contractual as much as technical: the consortium structure his group designed allocates a share of process value to participating cooperatives, and three cooperatives have since built processing capacity. His insistence on publishing process economics has been adopted by several groups in the field.
